AVG using 100% CPU

I've been having problems on my Laptop for a couple of weeks now. I've finally figured out that it's AVG which has been using 100% CPU, causing my laptop to over heat, and keep crapping out. I just hope that it's not caused any long term damage to the internals, as I left it on over night, and woke to to find it in a hung state, so God only knows how lond it had been running at full pelt.

Anyway, whats a good "free" alternative to AVG, as thats all I've ever used?
