Noise from new 18`s

As most have seen, I got hold of a set of 18s for the Vectra, they were cheap so I cant really complain, but.......
I get your standard road noise due to the extra rubber contact with the ground and the fact that they are quite low profile......
When I hit around 55 -60+ mph I get a windy sounding wwoooooooo (sorry best way I can think of describing it)

The wheels were cheap as they are not in the best condition and one of the wheels, Im told, is meant to be slightly buckeled. Gonna replace this one with the old standard 16 to see if it makes a difference, but thought Illd try on here to see if anyone had buckeled a wheel before and suffered this. :?

get em balanced and ask them to check/look for any buckling of the rims and any deformation of the tyres.

what type of tyres are fitted? make? speed rating? any uneven wear across the tread? are they all worn the same?

maybe one is slightly buckled and weighted accordingly and your getting a slight noise?

dunno i aint an expert, had a slight buckle in an alloy once, it was very noticeable!

Can`t think of tyre make off the top of my head. But all 4 are the same, and new.
The one that is said to be buckled is pretty well weighted, may have to get it checked.

If found to be the cause, can a buckle be fixed?

a buckle can't be fixed, but the noise is due to the lower profile tyres :roll:

Ta Vocky, just sounds really different, quite annoying & like I said - almost a whistling windy sound. Its just different to anything I heard in regards to road noise/rumble. Still, Ive got a stereo, just have to turn it up a dB or 2. 😃

two words "cheap tyres" when i bought my vec it had 4 wanlis on it they looked quite good but boy did it whine i even took it to vauxhall and had the car checked i was worried about a bearing going or the gearbox , the mech came back after a test drive and said he couldnt here anything above the tyre whine , i bought 4 good tyres and noise disappeared.

i would have the buckled wheel checked though but i imagine you would feel a vibration if its too bad.

what make are the tyres have a look and tell us it might shed some more light on the problem.

Different tyres makes and styles all differ in the noise generated, have a look some make an issue of being the quietist.
In all fairness the lower profile is the main bearing. Going from standard 205x55x16 to 215x40/35x18 every match stick on the road will be felt.

My wheels have got wanli's on there too,,,and i get loads of road noise from them...sounds like ive got 4 bearings shot...

........well I looked this morning and I`ve got that well known brand fitted - FULLRUN notsure.gif

Yet to look them up on the Net, but the lad I got the wheels from (£200), said he only really wanted to make his money back on the tyres.
From experiance the Goodyear Eagle F1`s on my AstraG (17") were priced at around 120 per corner.

i've got fullruns on mine (17's! i get that same noise aswell, sound like your bearings are on their way out. they are a cheap and nasty tyre, when i had them balanced the fitter had to put a load of weight on them. 2 were slightly out of shape aswell. mine came with the wheels aswell. Did the lad get them from a place called wheel worx by any chance notsure.gif )

Cheers Mr Boothy, not sure where he got em, Ill look seriously when having to replace them, glad (if that makes sense) that it`s the tyres though, thanks for the info mate.

pretty normal to get noise. Try using a softer compound tyre
