Best place to £500 to spend on engine?

Just looking for advice/opinions

I have a vx220 with a TMS stage 2 ( full miltek and map) and a courtenay modded airbox. I have a bit of spare cash at the mo and would like to improve power and/or characteristics of the engine.

I was thinking about the courtenay lightened flywheel (fitted) but would attempt most things my self if there is a good "how to" or guide. Really just wondered if i have missed something obvious, happy with good free mods as well

piper cams are good value, £235 inc vat + postage + fitting

lightened flywheel £225 + fitting

I would go for the cams as they add 10 bhp [according to piper]

Fitting a flywheel or clutch to a transverse engine can be a real pig of a job, it's esspecially difficult on the VX as there are 2 routes:

Remove rear clam, dissconect and lift engine away from the gearbox insitue. Which is how vaux and TMS do it.
Lift rear, disconect both hubs, move drive shafts out then drop the gearbox out, this is how most specialists do it but it requires the geo to be reset.

I did the clutch in my punto a couple of month ago and even with all the space to work it was still a PITA.

I must admit, the only reason I fitted a lightened flywheel was the engine and box was already out and I knew what a pig of a job it would be with the car complete :roll:

Thanks - cams seem the best option. How difficult is this? Is there a guide at all?

they are not to difficult to fit, but you need a cam chain locking tool to change them or you will need to strip off the timing chain cover to reset the timing 🙂

buy a haynes manual for a 2.2 vectra [haynes number 3930] or use the TIS cd

The cam-locking tool was £61.31 all-in from [ebay@uktools.com](mailto:ebay@uktools.com), but if you're going to play with the engine then it's a good investment.

You'll probably be able to sell it when you've finished.
