egr removal

hi guys, some advise/answers needed please :?

Noticed some engine running problems with my z22 recently, nothing major, unusual idle and slight hesitation sometimes at low revs. Tried all the usual, new sparklers, full service, thought id blank the egr off before getting new coil pack, and to my surprise I think its sorted it.

I've used the whopping great big bit of metal that vauxhall use pn24575592 to blank it with a new gasket nipped in there and hung the valve off of one mounting like this..

my questions below 🙂

A: I really would like to remove the valve completely, what is the current status of the brilliant egr cheater? (copyright S.Crisp/Vocky :lol: great work guys btw)

B: Dont think I can get this 'proged' out by tech2 can I? Its an early 2000 astra sri

C: Irrelevant kinda question but on a new/or good egr valve are you able to move the plunger freely or with slight force cause mine wont budge at all, even with a great big hammer

that's because it comes out from the valvebody not into the valvebody :lol:

I will vouch for it, it works absolutely fine even though i installed mine temporary about 2 months ago.

Are we any nearer to a suitable connector?
Or use connector from existing EGR diy, if got the pcb version.

I have removed the loom plug and hard wired the 'cheater' into the loom :shock:

can't get better than that dunno..

Why didnt i think of that, will have a go when ive got some time.

well they seem to work fine, so in future I will recommend cutting the loom plug off and simply join the wires together cheers..

Thanks for the replies guys, good to hear the circuit is working correctly and without any issues.

Would really like to hard wire this baby into the loom also, i presume vocky that you have hidden it in the trunking where the wires for the egr connector emerge?

So you just cut, soldered and shrinkwrapped the components into the loom in situ? or have you got them on a small board? please enlighten

Can you knock me something up so i can just hide it in the trunking and just solder and insulate the connections?

Defo need your help and wisdom vocky, this will save me some £££ cause i wont need a new valve and making a donation to the site would be a pleasure..

I will modify the design so it fits inside the trunking, it's a better way of fitting it anyway cheers..

Just a quick update..

Received my 'egr cheater' today(thx vocky).

Sorry about the pics, its the best my naff old phone can do. Here it is tucked away in the trunking.

No more rusty old egr valve.. 😃

I know im not doing anything new here, just wanted to show you guys incase i do or attempt to do anything foolish, which has been known. :lol:

Anyway would recommend the egr cheater to anyone wishing to remove their egr.

Going to give the tb a good clean out tomorrow with some carb cleaner and looking to remove the egr pipe at the same time.

So i need some s/s plate to make a blank, a 10p coin and washer. Anything else I might need? or anything i should look out for???

that arrived quick :shock:

you only need a 10p coin to blank off the manifold end, refit the 'O' ring seal, then fit the 10p and finally the clip 🙂

you might need to use two 10p's or a 10p then a 2p dunno..

Ok that sounds pretty easy, looks a bit fiddly though, not alot of room to manoeuvre.

Cut the flange off the pipe, and reuse it to retain engine cover bracket, and blank it off at the same time even though there should'nt be any gases coming out there now?

very fiddly :roll:

you don't need to fit a blanking plate to the flange as the flow is blanked off by the vauxhall blanking plate 🙂

i used chemical metal to fill the hole in the manifold, then shaped it to the manifold throat 😃

yep 12p sorted it 🙂 a 10p then a 2p worked ok for me, i put a little silicon sealant around it just to hold it in place better cause the clip is a bit dodgy, will probably fill it properly when i take the manifold off.

Anyway done 170 miles since removal of egr system and no problems to report, car seems to be running much better without it, defo had a duff egr valve.

Coming to this as a bit of an amateur!

I've ordered my egr cheater which I'll probably get in the post next week. But in the meantime I picked up a blanking plate from VXL yesterday. My question is:

Can i fit the blanking plate and keep the egr valve attached to one of its mounting points as a temporary fix to my problem, or do I need to wait until I get the cheater before I can use the car?
