Raise the age limit for driving test

Read on some other sites that there are plans to increase the age at which people can take their driving test to 18. What do people think of this?

I think its a good thing because insurance premiums are getting stupid in order to subsidise the highest risk catogory. My girlfriends daughter has just past her test at 17, she has been quoted (lowest) £1400 for a 1ltr saxo!!! Also there is the financial constaints to think of too, as she is pressuring us to pay for the insurance, which is a big deposit and £120 pm.
Raising the age is a shame but is needed imho.

the most recent near misses I've encountered involved 'very young' drivers and would have all been 'head on' crashes :evil:

so I say 'raise it up' :shock:

I am not 100% sure if it will make much difference to be honest, I agree all the near misses I have ever had, has been linked with young drivers. I feel that these near misses I encountered had something to do with the in-experience of the driver and not knowing the road conditions / how to handle the car rather then the driver age.

So drivers that pass there test at 18 are still in-experienced.

Yeah, i agree now i can drive !!! i wudnt have before !! im a sensible driver tho, thats the difference. I would agree with it. Like you said, new drivers at any age have a lack of experience, but 18 is still young and for a young person wanting a car, its would still be a big thing and i dont think that the age difference of one year will make to much of a difference agianst making the driver safe or not. I believe thats its all down to the drivers attitude towards driving !!!

i have to disagree with this one.

as said above raising the age by 1 year won't make that much difference, lack of experience is the major issue and youngsters who think they know it all where driving is concerned when they have just passed thier test.

i think you should be limited to what you can drive when you first pass your test, only allowed upto a certain engine size like with motorbikes.

I agree, I think that increasing the driving age won't make much differnce, they need to make the test tougher to pass. It's all down to experience, and knowing how to deal with situations, which ALL news drivers lack.

lol, I only had 19 lessons before I passed my test. Took five months to pass from first getting my provisional, and passed both the theory test and practical test first time. I did, however, crash within the first 6 months of getting my full licence, and it was my fault.

Unfortunately EVERYTHING in life comes with experience. Driving, working, marriage, raising children, money and many other things. We all learn the hard way at some stage but the important thing is that you learn by mistakes. Some mistakes are unavoidable and very unfortunate. Maybe a period of simulated driving experiences are needed??

I nearly lost my life when I was 17 being a f*cking idiot on a motorbike. I wasn't paying attention to the road and the bad weather conditions and I thought that I had enough room to overtake someone. The end result was me going head-on into another car. I was severly injured and so were the driver and passenger of the car that I hit. I lost the top of one of my fingers, smashed every bone in my hand, broke my wrist, a set of keys embedded in my leg and I had a blood transfusion. It could have been a lot worse. Needless to say I learn't a very stiff lesson and without being funny, i've never been the same since.
