2.2 Vectra engine rebuild

Right then, just picked my £200 bargain up!!

Definitely has a snapped cam chain so will require some of Vauxhalls finest parts in order to get it back on the road.

Other than that it needs a few cosmetic touches but not much. Already got a set of wheels lined up for it as you can see!

Had mucho fun towing it home down the A1, Matt Bankier looked scared for his life. Especially when I pulled out in front of the truck as I forgot I was towing something! Luckily GSI's seem able to drag double their weight with ease!

I'm gutted that I'm away for a week from tomorrow morning. Matt Bankier is going to pop round during the week to give it a bit of a general tidy up though.

Excuse the blurriness of some of them, my phone doesn't seem as good since I jumped fully clothed into a river to save my drowning dog (I'm not even joking)!!

remember to loosen the crank bolt with the engine mount still in place, use a good fitting socket and the longest bar you can find, then get someone to press the brake pedal with the car in first gear, it might then undo..........they are very tight :lol:

to remove the long bolt from the lower timing chain cover either jack the engine up another 250mm or lower in onto the subframe or remove the cover with the bolt still loosely fitted.

That's the kind of advice I'm after!! I already got the crank pulley bolt out, used 5th gear and a Matt Bankier on the brakes!!

Have kind of been pondering the long bolt from the timing chain cover though! I'm just off to Hellfrauds now to buy a big enough Torx socket to get the mount off to lower the engine. Also need a 25mm spanner for the cam pulleys.

Anything else I should get while I'm there?

might be worth double checking that one cheers..

try and buy a torq socket set / rail of sockets, mine was only £25 and has about 15 sockets 🙂

that will help you loads cheers..

everything else is normal tool stuff, you will need a 'degree wheel' and a torque wrench :roll:

a word of advice regarding the rebuild

the camshaft carriers (the alloy thingys) have two bolts, these are only tightened to 7 lb torque AND will stretch and snap if over tightened, so might be worth getting a mini torque wrench for them

also get a haynes manual 3930 if you haven't already got one, all the torque settings are in there for the 2.2 or I can post them on here if you need them 🙂

I've got loads of Torq sockets, I've never come across a bolt on my V6 that needed one as big as this engine mount though. notsure.gif

I might play it safe and buy a 24 and a 25mm spanner. I measured it with my micrometer and it showed something like 24.58mm!

I guess once I have the degree wheel I'm away!!! (Apart from re-building the head and buying/fitting the new timing chain and all the gaskets I suppose)

use vx gaskets and bolts, I found them cheaper than pattern parts :?

Funnily enough, I undid a few of the cam carrier bolts and wondered why they weren't tight!! That explains it!!

I 'borrowed' the Haynes manual from Stevesace on VVOC, I'll still pop millions of questions up though!

Right then, got some fairly major bits off yesterday. Here's the pics!!

Some good progress made there....is it me or do the locating pegs on the cam sproket look bent.....How many bent valves u got awell?

your chain never snapped, it jumped a few teeth 🙁

then the valves hit the pistons 🙁

get that oil jet out and see if it's the old type........which it will be :evil:

looking at the damage to the pistons I think you need to remove them to make sure the rings are still free to move dunno..

a common after effect of chain damage is a smoking engine, which is caused by the rings being unable to move due to damaged pistons 🙁

it's so much cheaper to check them now rather than having to pull the head back off later :roll:

just a case of dropping the sump and removing the conrod bolts, so no cost involved, just a couple of hours time 🙂
