Broken Vec 2.2

Hiya,

I've just bought a 2.2 Vectra estate with what's been described as a broken engine due to cam chain failure.

What's likely to be wrong with it and how easy is it going to be to fix it?

A few bent parts top end. Vocky will know for sure. You must have got that cheap 🙂. Your local to me as I am in Gateshead, just seen you are from Newcastle..

depends on the engines rpm when the chain snapped notsure.gif

at tickover, usually a few valves (I have a full set for sale)

at 3k rpm usually most valves are bent :roll:

at higher rpm the pistons get damaged too 🙁

I just put Newcastle so the southerners know approximately where I'm from!!

If you know Burnopfield really well then you might get first hand updates on it's progress!! Always handy to compare a broken one with a working one!!

I make a pretty decent cup of coffee too.

Absolutely!! I just bought this as it was too good to turn down. I could almost get my money back on this just by selling the Irmscher exhaust!

I'm thinking about keeping it as a limousine for this fella though

As much as Dave likes the GSI he does tend to get it a right state when we've been to the beach etc.

Quick update, apparently it started making a noise week or so ago (presumably the chain stretching)

Then the noise go a bit worse so the bloke stopped driving it.

Then he went to start it and it didn't fire, said it felt lke the engine was just spinning.

Hopefully I'll get away with a new set of valves and a new cam chain etc.!

Where's the best/cheapest place to get the chains and tensioners? Trade club at Vauxhall?

autovaux are cheap or trade club at vaux 🙂

vaux only part 🙂

I would also get the gaskets from vaux too, I always use genuine gaskets and headbolts, not that dear and OE spec 8)

if it snapped on startup, you will hopefully get away with a few valves dunno..
