The first thing to check to see if the alternator has gone is with the engine running measure the voltage across the battery terminals, it should around 14.4V. If the voltage is correct turn on some accressories and check the voltage again as it should stay around that value. If the voltage is at 12V with the engine running then the regulating diodes have gone. A cheaper oprion would to buy a recon alternator.
