Well i've just found an old 4 gig hard drive hidden away and was gonna throw it out but decided to have a play with it so i've installed it in my pc and have now installed ubuntu on it. Got it dual booting with XP.

don't really know what i'm doing at the moment but wanna try and get used to it and learn a bit about it. been thinking about trying for ages but never got round to it lol. dunno why i chose ubuntu, if anyone has any hints/tips please feel free to throw them my way lol.

What do you want to know mate? Ubuntu is the most "user friendly" of the newer distros out. What version have you just installed? I think the latest is 7.04.

I personally prefer Fedora, although the desktop's look similar due to them both using Gnome as the default.

If you get stuck, give us a shout, and I'll lend a hand.

lol cheers Matt. yeah i think its 7.04.

at the moment everything is huge cos the resolution is set to 1024 x 768 but thats the highest it will go even though i can go higher in XP

No, as you can't run .exe files in Linux

its an nvidia geforce 7600GT

Instructions for getting the card working with the latest version of Ubuntu.

It's a lot easier in Fedora, as you just need to add a 3rd party repository, and install the drivers from there:

well i've followed the instructions in the 1st link and i still can go higher although it has added extra screen sizes. must have done something wrong i guess lol.

So you can see the extra screen sizes in the settings? Have you logged out and logged back in again? X needs to restart itself for new settings to take place.

right the options i got now are

1024 x 768
800 x 600
640 x 480
960 x 600
832 x 624

and three refresh rates, 50, 53 and 54

before i tried to get the card working i only had the top 3 resolutions and onle 50 as the refresh rate.

aslo i had a pop up appear when i'd finished, it was something to do with a restricted driver. could it be something to do with that?

Yeah it will be. You need to allow restricted drivers.

There should be a setting somewhere in the Administration section. I'm not sure exactly, as I've never actually installed and used Ubuntu

Cool, these are what I use when I mess about setting new stuff up. I've got one of my magazines as well which has an article on the new Ubuntu. I'll have a look at it when I get in and see if there is anything of use in it.
