My car has been laid up now for last 6-12months and being occasionally cranked about half-a-dozen times to make sure it doesn't seize up...
During this time the alarm has slowly discharged the battery and there's little fuel in the tank. It does start & run, however the power steering is failing i.e. wheel hard to turn/no assistance. Initially I thought it might need a few revvs to build up the pressure in the system from lying so long, so I took it out a blast around the block but found that the steering was still very heavy. At no point does the steering feel as though it's being assisted by the engine. Fluid levels are fine and the braking system is as responsive as it has been.
My questions are:
- Would low battery power cause this??
- Would low fuel cause this? (surely not as it's not actually ran out yet - although there can't be much left in the tank!?!?)
- Any ideas what's going on?
The car is just about to come back onto the road, but I need to get this steering issue sorted before it can go through the MOT. I'm hoping it's not the pump or some other expensive item, so please share any advice/experiences with me on this one.
Thx,
John
