COOL Andy so how does it work do you download the music from your pc onto the head unit via usb cable or via i-pod? cool screen what comes up on that mate or is it a screen for dvds like the JVC one?

Rip CDs to the PC or down load from itunes or download from a torrent ect. Put the tunes on the ipod, connect the ipod to the head unit via usb and your off!! The screen displays album art just like the ipod, tunes downloaded from itunes come with this, if you copy a cd or download from a torrent i just find the album cover on HMV and add to the itunes folder.

Yeah the quality is good but ill get a better idea once i get the sub/amp fitted and upgrade the speakers.

So the unit only plays from a external device like a ipod or usb flash drive? The HU it's self does not cantain any storage for tunes.

Must admit they do look nice and more than likely sound better than the other big brand names as all Alpine head units do in their respective price category. Great if your a convert to Apples demands and bullying.
2 or 3 Pre outs?
Do they only play Itunes or does it do mp3, wma, etc?

I can get 1150+ on a DVD may be more only tried Cyberlink Pro as Windows Media Player only accepts CD and have to upgrade Nero 7 to do it otherwise. Can plug in external hard drives, skies the limit 120000+ for a 500Gb less £ than an Ipod. Album art, scrolling song and band, etc.
Costs about £30 to play Ipod on mine but not quite the same. Had more than enough of my phone with Itunes, gimme mp3, mpeg4, wma any day its universal.

Forgot to say Kef and Genesis branded speakers (made by Dynaudio) along with Genesis amps work well with Alpine.
Use decent RCA and speaker cable it makes a lot of difference.

It will play the AAC format which Apple uses, as the Ipod itself if doing all the decoding and processing.

Andy, do you still get all the steering wheel controls with the use of an adapter? Also, have you hidden the USB cable away somewhere?

Matt, the wireing in the MK5 is totaly different to the MK4, it uses one of them canbus thingys. I bought an Alpine interface (APF-S100op) which does the steering controls and has the canbus conector built in, for some reason these are not very well advertised. Im sure there are adaptors for Alpine to Astra MK4. Another weird thing the MK5 has no accesory position on the ignition even Alpine are confused with this one! As for feeding the usb, i have the ipod in glove box where there happens to be a little hole to feed the wire through, the hole is actually for an air con cooled glove box, i will be adding the part to cool the clove box soon so im gonna have to find another hole!!

3 pre-outs, front, rear and sub! Yet to try this yet, but ill be running a sub to start off with.
