Got to say, hadn't considered the XP issue, but I thought this resolved with the Genuine Advantage scheme?

The genuine validation scheme has nothing to do with it allowing your copy of xp to update, if you change some of the internals of a machine running an OEM copy.
Lets say for instance you just turned your pc on for the 1st time, once xp validates the copy by scaning your pc and making a record of the hardware. So if that same copy tries to be installed on another machine, it knows its breaching the ELUA (terms&cond).
Having said that, microsoft will give some leway if you call them up and say your mobo has blown so you replaced it with a different one (but they will probably only allow this once)
Changing ram usually aint a problem, but processers, mobo, and if changed often enough, hard drives will invallidate your copy (OEM that is).
