I currently have a panasonic one and my dad has 2 panasonic ones lol. if i was to replace mine it would be for another panasonic.

if you are planning on buying one try and get one with a hard drive built in, saves messing about with blank dvd's all the time.

do you have other dvd players in the house?? if so make sure that the recorder you buy records on the same format discs as the others i.e + discs or - discs. think you can get some that will record to both.

I have to agree with Andy, i have a DVD recorder, and never used the recording feature in the 18 months that i have had it, i stopped at my parents house for 2 nights, and i used their DVD Hard Drive recorder about 6 times. lol

Definatly worth paying that extra and getting a HDD one, as you can pick them up for around £130 i think.

Pay the extra shop around for a Panny or JVC. 20 Gbb hard drive aint that big though did get all the episodes of one series of Shameless on plus a film.
Also get it decoded play anything all region, all of mine are done even the car.

Having had experience of quite a few in a short space of time, I'd say the following.

Panasonics are fast and work well in menus, they support more disk types including THEIR DVD-RAM format. However, they lack a number of features.

Philips, they have more features than you know what to do with, some are awesome, however and probably as a result of the above, interaction can be very slow at times particularly in menus. One of the biggest features over the Panasonic I have now and the Philips I had, is being able to do two things at once, watch and record etc. Also The Panasonic I have will not do instant rewind (like SKY +) the Philips did.

I spent another £100 on the Panasonic after crap customer care from Philips when it went wrong within days of purchasing. To me, that money was well wasted ....

Sorry, I know there are some Panasonic lovers above, there is no doubt they have quality, they just need more features for the money.

What do you mean instant rewind?
Had a digital 100hz Phillips tv in 94 that had a freeze frame/still, forget the service after the guarantee much like Sony it dont exist and scrap.
Sorry refuse to support Sky any more, they nulled the contract after i upgraded, everything except sports for £14.99 p/m then continually increased the price ever since £33 or 36? 4 years back with nothing extra effectively added.

Got a Panny DRM EH50 had it a couple of years. 20Gb hard drive aint big enough so will have to rip it apart and have a look what type it is.

The philips had instant rewind up to 6 hours as long as it had been on that long, so you could go backwards and watch a programme if the phone had rang etc.

The Panasonic does not have this.

Had/still have pc cards, but it's just not as easy.

As regards Sky, until somebody brings out something technically as good (and I really mean that) I can't afford to give it up.

you can't instant rewind with the panasonic but you can play and record at the same time so if you have to nip to the loo you can play from the begining of the recording or fast forward and still carry on recording.

That's what I was saying the Panny does not do Instant Rewind, also, the model I have (the latest 160 Gig Freeview DVD/Hard disk HDMI) does not do play and record at the same time which is ridiculous.
