Engine check light.

Unfortunately I don't have access to a diags kit so just after general ideas.

My engine check light came on yesterday, engine is running fine (about 54,000 miles) but the fuel gauge is broken. I tried removing the battery to clear the faults and the car was fine until it was restarted then the check light came back on.

Could it be related to the broken fuel gauge?
Any other ideas what are causing it?

Actually sort of on the same subject anyone know why my fuel gauge has died....?
It happened whilst giving it some beans on the motorway, the fuel gauge went from half a tank to full.... Stayed there for 2-3 mins then dropped off the bottom and hasn't moved since.

you need to get the codes read and also buy another dash gauge dunno..

otherwise it's a 'stab in the dark' what the code is :roll:

Where are you based mate? I've not got a tech2 but I do have an ELM327 thingy that connects to my laptop which will read fault codes and clear them 🙂

Also for people who don't own a laptop, but would like to be able to read out diagnostics and reset their check engine light, the stand-alone OBD readers are becoming pretty cheap. I was recently looking at a dutch site, which offers this one:

(yeah, I know, it's dutch 🙂 ). Price is pretty ok, guess it would translate to like 67 pound including vat. So you should be able to find that in the UK to for similar price.

I tried the U381 scanner from Mike at www.talktomycar.co.uk but it wasn't compatible with my Vectra (September 2001). I thought it would be but it wasn't. So Mike suggested the ELM327 and said he was sure it would work. And it does. Also works on my dad's Focus and wife's Fiesta too 😃

£68 for a Bluetooth ELM327... Thats sweet sweet news...
Or do I play it really safe and go USB for £55?

Surely the bluetooth one is where it's at... No silly cables and can leave laptop on bonnets or workbench... Hmmmmmmmmm

Dont forget to look in the Classifieds for scanners for sale!!!!! The one Im selling will work on all makes use it twice and it`s paid for itself.
