What else can rattle on startup?

Had both chains replaced, few days of silent running then i get the noise back 🙁

Its on startup when its been stood a while, lasts for about 2-5 seconds, and it rattles, sounds like its comming from the camchain area and why i had the chains replaced.

Can the water pump rattle? i havent lost any coolant, plus the idea of paying a fortune to have both chains removed again will probably push me beyond the bounds of sanity :evil:

oil and water both clean.

Getting a bit fed up now im afraid, exhaust flexi gone and got 'the' clutch noise too

Could it be the sound of the engine itself before the oil has chance to circulate fully? I'm sure someone else will be able to shed a bit more light on the subject.

worn cam lobes dunno..

nothing to worry about short term, but you can listen to them with a long screwdriver held to your ear and then touch the blade onto the cam cover in various places

Just out of curiosity do you park your car on a slope, nose down, regularly? My driveway has a fairly steep slope, probably about 30 degrees or so. If i park nose down, it rattles for a split second when i start it. If i park nose up, nothing at all. My chains are new and so is my oil. Must have something to do with the oil draining away when parked nose down and you get a split second rattle before it circulates

Its only started doing this recently, ive had the car for over a year, parked level.

Ill have a probe around with a screwdriver :p

Ive recorded an avi of it starting with the rattle, stopping then restarting without it, should have it uploaded on monday when i can borrow my mates broadband connection, my 56k cant cope lol

also double check the oil level, a low level can cause it too.

best way is to twist the dipstick 360 degrees before removing it 🙂

Currently its a bit too high, the garage overfilled it when they did the chains. Hard to tell how much by with the guess-a-level dipstick.

Must admit i always check it with a cold engine, it says in the handbook to have it at operating temperature and leave it to stand for a few mins.

I started the dipstick twisting thing when you posted it a while back 🙂

it's a lottery finding the correct level :lol:

the reason is: in the sump, the oil has to go down a long tube to reach the dipstick, so if this blocks = wrong oil level :roll:

Wonder if vauxhall design their engines these days or just cobble em together :p

Anyhows, clip uploaded:

It show the engine starting with a bit of a rattle (it varies in length usually), stop and restart without the rattle, then i rev it a bit. All sounds normal apart from the first startup.

My mate had the same problem it was the wrong oil in it. could be too thing i.e mobile one

Nah nothing fancy in it, tis due an oil change, ill see if that cures it.

Whats the reccomendation vauxhall semi synth or full synth?

I put vaux 10w-40 semi synthetic in mine.

I've had this since I had my head changed, still there when I got a brand new engine. Only happens on first cold start though and just for the first few seconds.

Ahh so i can stop worrying then 😃

I mostly thought it was serious because its never done it before, i cant think what might have changed to cause it, but it'l beright.

Ill get some vaux semi synthetic tanked in, see how it responds to that.

that sounds like the big ends have no oil, an oil change should sort it 🙂

some molyslip might help if the noise stays dunno..

Still got the noise, havent chainged oil yet though, been having problems with my undercar heat shield of late.

Ill get there eventually, thanks for all the help
