2nd gear problems, gear linkage?

I noticed it yesterday when test driving the car (haven't bought it yet) basically, going down from 3rd to 2nd, it was quite hard to get in to gear, it seemed really far over to the left, moreso than it should have (I think, not driven another, so I can't be sure)

Or is that normal?

It's a 2002 02 Astra by the way.

Anyway, if it's dodgy, what can I do? notsure.gif

Did you drive the car from cold? Some Vauxhalls are a bit tight to get into gear from cold but fine once warmed up. If you think it's too far to the left it might need the gears set up. It's easy enough and it's done from under thr bonnet.

I drove it when it was warm, so I don't know if it was worse cold or not (mistake, I know, but it's a car within the family, so I trust them)

If it's just linkage alignment, that's cool, I can sort that. I just wanted to check the gearbox wasn't falling out or anything :lol:

Some gear boxes are tight with them not getting much use. Some are sloppy with being worn out. Yours might just be a nice tight box thats not been worn out much, sort of new like.

Could be that, it's not been driven much in the last year.

Mines a touch slopy!!! Also is a struggle to get into 1st and reverse form sationery :?

Mines tight from 3rd to 2nd but it always goes in gear ok been like it from new.

you can reset the linkages, quite easy to do, but requires a set procedure 🙂

I've just bought a Zafira thats tight in the box (ooh er!) going into 2nd from 4th or 3rd. I don't think its anything to worry about although I have heard that there was a modification for the Astra linkage around the gearstick assembly??

Ive never liked the gear change in my Astra. Infact, i would say it is the worst gearbox i have every had!

You should try driving my Corsa then, it's already on it's 3rd gear linkage, and has done 32k, that's part of my reason for selling up and buying an Astra.

I've put the deposit down now anyway, so it's definitely mine, I'll just have to sort this out if it does turn out to be a problem...
