are changing the chains an ok diy job

guys my timing chain has now started to rattle quite bad, so it is getting changed asap (means i'm running around in an escort).

car is a 2001 vec 150

i have 2 questions for the chain gods.

is it a job that a diy macanic could perform easily (i'm ok with engines, just never done a timing chain)
do you need any special tools
any tips to get it done easily

no special tools required 🙂

if you can fit a timing belt, you can replace the z22se timing chain 🙂

quite easy to do, but allow a day just in case.

basically remove cam cover, jack up engine, remove crank pulley (very tight - use a long bar and have someone press the brake pedal whilst car in gear)

then remove chain cover and all is revealed.

get a haynes manual too 🙂

it's fubared. aint driving it till i get it done.

not in any hurry, going to look to see how much it will cost me all in.

i know vx want £500 to supply & fit, fu*k that i'll diy.

There is one bolt that comes out against the inner wing. You'll have to jack or lower the engine a bit so that it clears and then you can remove it.

surely the engine wont move that much??????? dunno..

There is a lightening hole in the inner wing where you can jiggle the bolt out of. And yes, the engine does move that much when you've removed the top engine mount.

Also....don't forget to lock your cams in position with the 2 spanner and mole grips method!!

do you realy need to lock the cams, surley if the timing marks are as prodominent as they are then it doesnt matter

u dont need to lock the cams ,but it stops them jumping around,,not so much of prob on the standard cams but on the shrick ones like johnny got there aint no provision for spanners to move them back into line...
the only time u wud need one is for the crank bolt,but that can be done without....
