Cheap tyres !

Just had a set of Mk1 GSi rims re-furbished and I've been hunting for some tyres.
Tried ringing round all the usual suspects, but 215 45 17's seem to be the dearest size 17's available !

The most reasonable quote locally for something "half decent" was a set of Ceat's at ATS £360 fitted.
Passing the local Kwik-fit, I noticed a price guarantee poster outside, so I popped in for a quote.

Told the guy I didn't rate Goodyears, but I wanted something reasonable.
He suggested Bridgestones RE050, he said they're standard fittment on Imprezas and they're very highly rated.
He asked if I'd had another quote locally, so I told him that ATS quoted £360 all in (for the Ceat's), and he said Kwik-fit would beat that by at least £10, just so they'd get the business !

He priced me 4 Bridgestone RE050's for £350 fitted !!!
Paid there and then, and came home and double checked on Kwik-fit's website, they retail for £550 madas

I usually get my tyres from here, because there only 1min drive down the hill from my house. lol

From personal experience, I wouldn't let Kwikfit clean my windscreen let alone attack the car with tools. The amount of damage they can do in a very few seconds doesn't bear thinking about.

wouldnt let kwik fit near mine.
i use a local guy, small and a bit more expensive but its worth it to me cos he does a good job and i can trust him not to damage the vehicle 😃

I had the Bridgestones fitted !

Clocked up nearly 1,000 miles, and I'm chuffed to bits.
Massive amounts of grip, in both the wet and dry, and they really show up just how good the Bilstein/Eibach combination is 😃

I checked with the tyre fitters before I handed over my cash.

I watched him change a set of 18"s on a Lexus, not a scratch !!

St Austell's depot has a brand new "Bear" tyre machine that doesn't even come into contact with the rims.

I suppose it all comes down to fitter/equipment, but if their prices compare when these wear out, I'll certainly go back to them 😃

Gonna need two fronts in the next couple of weeks only had em on end of March, friggin Toyo Proxes T1R, no wheel spinning just normal driving. The walls have started to fold already even though they are pumped up to 34.
So was looking for something decent Bridgestone, Yokohamas or may be some more F1 which are better all round than T1R.

I need sum new tyres on the front too within the next month, i can get nice cheep ones from halfords for 28 quid a tyre !! I think they are accelera (some name ive never heard of) Are cheep tyres as a rule any good ? I suspect they will wear quicker ?

Within reason, you get what you pay for.

I always buy the best tyres I can afford, because it's the only thing joining your brakes/suspension/a*s to the road !!

Personally i would not go for some asian made unknown, but if you are only pottering around town could be ok.
You can spend all the money you like on suspension mods but still come no where near a good set of tyres.
If you want mileage the std fit Michellin Pilots are brill. I need more performance out of a tyre and wont be going back to T1R again even at 75 fitted.

Another thing that worries me, some big brand names are now being made in China, so when you order you need to ask the question.

So how do the Bridgestone RE wear and do the walls fold easilly when run in/scuffed up?

Best tyres known to man for road use were the old Yokohama A008, rain sleet or shine. This is the difference fitted to the front of a front wheel drive XR2, with NCT2 an extremely good tyre at the time, P6 never rated, Firestone S??? and an Avon?, you could very easilly get the back end out! R version illegal for road use.
So if you have more grip, you have better braking!

I have nangangs on the front at the mo, and they are quite good, wearing a bit now tho, had proxies before and they wear soo quickly. I always use mytyres, nothing comes close to em. Need to buy 2 new ones for the back soon.

Had T1R on the back as well up to end of March, done 18/19k from memory, shocked was bald over the width, thought they would be 1/2 worn a lot of straight lining. Not having them again had 6 tyres in 14 months, a lot less if changed when should have.
Incidently as a like for like compare in the dry, i can spin up the front wheels with the T1R on, swap em over to F1, same speed and just a murmer.
In all fairness havent compared like for like in other conditions and dont intend to ie who wants to change 4 wheels round in the rain as quick as poss to eliminate any condition changes.

Will have to start looking round for prices and tyres, one was the full wet, intermediate, semi slick on outside which a few have done over the years, will have to check.
