make your own inlet

this was my attempt at making a new inlet manifold for my vec

started off as a golf/seat gti 16v inlet manifold

after a bit of cutting

taking shape

TIG welded

looks nice :lol:

next I made an adaptor plate

which bolted to the z22se

then the manifold

sounded awesome, but the ecu kept going into limp mode :cry:

I never got round to sorting that, shame really :roll:

That looks awesome. How did you cut out the adaptor plate? Must have been a bit of a work hacking through 1cm thick aluminium?

Any ideas why the ECU kept going into limp mode? Maybe too much pressure fluctuation on the vacuum sensor?

very nice m8, looks a lot like the GM turbo intake manifold (bet your cost an amazing amount less tho lol)

total cost about £80 :lol:

and £50 was the TIG welding 🙂

was quite easy, just drilled loads of holes and then cut around them :lol:

I think the ecu issue was pressure fluctuation, probably needed a different sensor dunno..

Could you mount the sensor in a box with a small hole leading to the main chamber? That should make the pressure fluctuate less violently...

but I've returned my vec to standard and the inlet is the wrong way round for my vx220 🙁

I'm currently pondering whether to get an Emerald ecu and make my own throttle bodies conversion, so the manifold will never get used again 🙁

Its interesting about your problems - I really hope its only a fluctuating vacuum reading - I can't imagine it could be anything else (did you get an OBD fault code?).

I've got some GSXR 1000 throttle bodies at home that I'm going to try and fit onto the engine with the stock ECU (using the original injectors and a hacked up ETB to control all 4 butterflys). I'm not holding out a huge amount of hope for it not throwing the ECU, but if it works it should finally give my car a better induction sound 😃 I can't imagine there will be improved power though without pretty extensive remapping or a new ECU.

Hum, isn't our ECU MAP to RPM mapped ?
Sounds impossible to me, i'm quite sure our ECU is speed density (MAP) based

Not quite sure I understand the problem? I'm probably totally missing something though. The TBs all have a vacuum take-offs, which i'll join up and connect to a small box housing the MAP sensor.
To the ECU, it should just look as if the air flows a bit better in the inlet - as if someone put a larger TB on, which people have been doing here without trouble for ages. I definitely won't get maximum performance, but I will get that TBs noise, which is what i've missed since the sidedraughted Pinto - and i would be surprised if performance wasn't a little better than before 🙂

I'm not sure what to expect though. Worst case, I've wasted £150 and a few days work. It will have been fun tinkering anyway.

I think with mine the vacuum was wrong (map sensor) and too little fuel (mapping)

I really miss the sound of a RS2000 on twin 45's, awesome drool.gif
