Fitting a new manifold

TIS says that you need to replace the 10 nuts and also use a tightening torque of 12 Nm.

Has anyone done this by the book or there's nothing to worry about.

If you've fitted the manifold yourself please tell me how hart (or not) should i tighten the nuts.

When you come to undo the nuts hold onto the studs with a small torx spanner and youll lessen the chance of snapping a stud off. At our vxl garage we do the nuts up as tight as we can safely go as they have a habit of loosening themselves over time, dont go daft though or you`ll strip the threads inside the head.

depends on the condition of the bolts, my veccy bolts have always been easy to undo, but my vx220 were rusty and I used wd40 on them and they came undone ok.
but a few studs came out the head, so I used a vice and plenty of wd40 and the nuts came off, then it was just a case of refitting the studs into the head.

Another problem, kinda strange and one i've just noticed.

I've ordered the exhaust manifold and the gasket for it, and the part numbers are alright but the gasket doesn't fit with the manifold. I've put the part numbers in EPC and everything's in order.

Guess i'll have to take the old one down to see if they are the same or not. I'm 99.9% sure that they're not identical simply because it doesn't make any sense to have a gasket that doesn't fit like a glove.

it should still work, but is a later spec gasket than I've seen

I finally sorted the exhaust manifold of my car. replaced it with a new one a bit of DIY that took almost 5 hours with the help of my mate lol. forgot to fix back the lower half of the heat shield. Is this mandatory or can I drive around without the lower half of the heat shield?

Thanks Vocky. I suppose the gasket is a later spec but it really annoys me that it doesn't fit as it should.

Did you had the same problem with the gasket ? I haven't fitted mine yet but as you see in the earlier posts, mine doesn't seem to fit the manifold's profile (see pics).

The screw holes and the borders fit on both the manifold and the gasket but that's about it.

Maybe you can post a pic of your old gasket (if you still have it).

I'd really like to solve this before taking everything appart.

sorry mate, dont have the old gasket. but it defnitely looks different to the pics you have posted. I bought both manifold and gaskets from Vaux dealershp couple of days ago, so they must be recent. my manifold was not cracked, the threads on one of the studs had worn out and there was a bolt missing (the bit where manifold connects to down pipe ) it was blowing from there. had to rush to get the gasket that goes between manifold and front down pipe. I cant even change a wheel and I was so excited when did this. because I could not get under the car, it took me more than an hour to get a bolt off.

do you think its safe to drive without the lower half of the heat shield?
