DIY Fitment of Remus centre

I am just about to purchase a remus centre for my astra, but after phoning up a fair few garages no one wantsto fit it either that or they want £70 to fit it.

My exisiting one doesnt look to bad how easy is it to fit myself?

might need a bit of heat to slide it off cat but mine came off easy! i would give it a go coz 70 quid is outrageous

should be easy enough just a little awkward unless you got access to a car lift

i changed my front section with my car on small car ramps, was easy enough just awkward laying under the car.

I've always done mine myself but you will need a good trolley jack and some axle stands to have enough room underneath to tackle it yourself. I do need to warn you though. Splitting the original center section from the cat could be a right c**t, its luck of the draw, the second thing you will find a right pain in the arse is the flange fitting to the rear box. When you try to rebuild the system you will find that instead of tapping out and threading the flange on the remus center, they just weld nuts on the back of the flange. Whats the problem with that you ask? The trouble is the springs that the bolt passes through and applys persure to the joint are very strong and trying to compress them that extra 10mm through the flange to get the bolt thread started is nearly imposible and can very easily lead to you stripping the threads. You end up tying to push the head of the bolt in with pipe grips whislt turning at the same time with a spanner, all on your back and over the rear beam....Not fun. Remus need fecking for such a sh!t design.

When My mate bought his remus, after the trouble I had, I just took it straight to work, ground the nuts off and welded the holes up so I could drill and tap them properly. Fitted dead easy then.

that's why i went for the cybox center also its shiny and not black so you can see its stainless and its a very easy fit i took mine down the local tyre center they fitted it for £10

^lightning -- you could of just used longer bolts even less trouble than welding and tapping i used some new stainless bolts so it would not be a problem to remove in the future

You cant just use longer bolts because the standard ones are sholder bolts. I.e. they have a 30-40mm sholder and only the last 15mm or so of the bolt is threaded. The idea being that the bolt screws down to the sholder and has something to tighten up against rather than just crushing the spring beyond its designed compression level.

I also had to grind the nuts off, they are useless!

well mines fine with the stainless set screws, springs are fully compressed and no leak's,,as you can see from the pic the standard bolts wern t good enough the exhaust leaked until i put the new sets in
and the standard (bolts) are just bolts not shoulder bolts in bolt terms any who. 😃 😃
simple to just buy new bolts tho lol

Thanks for all your input guys. not sure what to do now, dont know weather i should just buy the remus and have a crack.
or do i go for a cybox one, is the cybox one easier to fit due to it not having welded nuts and been in two sections?

Also if i go for the remus one will i need new gaskets and nuts?

Is there any sound difference from remus or cybox?

with the Remus i removed the nuts and used new bolts, no gasket was needed

I am just about to order the remus one as i know i have a flange fitment at the rear but on looking at the pictures the remus looks like it has a flange fitment at the front too but the cybox has a sleeve fitment can anyone just clear up this issue.

I have a 2.2 2003 Astra Hatch i thought they where all sleave fitment at the front?

Are remus just using a random picture or is it flange fitment at the front?

The remus is a sleeve at the front and a flange at the rear. The picture is just a generic one.

depending on what year your car is if i remember correctly <2002 sleeve at backbox >2003 flange at rear... (sjdickso) yours should be flange at back and sleeve at front, but check b4 you buy 😃 also the cybox has the nuts welded on (inverted flange) but don't cause a problem like the remus so it seams from the thread...

This is a straightforward replacement for your existing centre section, from the catalytic converter backwards.

Suitable for 1.6, 1.8, 2.2 & 2.0 Non-Turbo models with flange-fitting rear silencers. Not suitable for the later sleeve-fitting rear silencers.
