Noise when in gear off throttle rattling/tapping noise

Hi all new here

I own a '52 VX220 2.2 and i've got an annoying problem or it could be normal. i get a rattling noise from the engine it only happens in gear off throttle as in slowing down or maintaing say 60mph more noticable in 4th and 5th if i press the clutch it disappears.

Any ideas?

It sounds like what a thrust bearing would do. Welcome to the forum 🙂

i get a similar noise in my 220 na, its apparently quite common, my guess is that its the timing chain, remember there is next to no sound insulation and its also right behind your head so on overrun the chain will be under no tension at all. I have been paranoid about my chain snapping but after checking my engine number its outside of the problamatic range so i am hoping wont go any time soon (25k at the moment!)

by the way mine is a 52 na with an engine number of **65644 so i am told this is when the later cam chain parts were fitted

thank you for the replies i considered timing chain as i guess all of us with z22se do.... my engine number is ***73095 but why would it stop when i press the clutch

most likely the thrust bearing in the clutch or gearbox input shaft

are you saying the clutch is in or your just pressing the pedal slightly?

clutch is in all the way although saying that holding the revs with clutch in does still make the noise
