Whine coming from engine

Have a 2.2 coupe, only had it a couple of months, started to hear a whine coming from the engine, its a 51 plate.
Any ideas what this could be, gets louder with the revs! Someone says it sounds like my power steering pump.
Its a guy in work he seems really sure thats what it is, not so sure though.

You mentioned it gets louder with revs, does it change as you steer, ie putting the steering pump under load.
I`ve had a whine from mine which is looking like a faulty water pump, I had the belt and tensioner changed as I thought it could have been that.
I had Griffen motors search under the bonnet with a stethascope which may help put ypur mind at rest before changing items. Wish I had done that prior to having the belt changed etc, could have just bought a new water pump with the dosh!!!

Doesn't sound any different with the steering and the steering feels absolutely fine! Yeah looks like ill have to take it in somewhere for a quick look! It might just be me but im sure the sound gets lower the longer the engine runs, might be talking rubbish though.

Sorry, I can`t be more help, that info should help should someone else read this or if you do end up at the garage.
I hate it, even though my water pump is doing its job, the noise is really irritating.
Hope you get it sorted soon and it is something simple.

not sure where the power steering pump is on an astra, follow the pipes and see where it is

the vectra has it bolted to the end of the inlet cam, but the astra does not :?

its below the relay box on the steering rack (electric pump on Astra) it is winey but not to bad possibly the acc belt tensioner mine squeaks when you change gear to quick think the bearings gone

take out the fuse for the pump, then you can see if the noise dissappears 🙂

Just to put your mind at rest mate I've got a 2.2 coupe also and have the exact same noise I have had my mechanic out in it and said exactly what evocarlos said... cheers..
