I've got the dreaded rattle. Pulled up outside home last night and the car sounded like a diesel. Definate rattling coming from the timing chain side of the engine.
So I'm using Mrs SteveW's Fiesta at the mo because I'm too scared to even start mine again!
Phoned up one Vauxhall dealer ths morning and spoke to a service desk blokey. he didn't even know the 2.2 had a timing chain!! Needless to say I won't be going there
So I phoned up my local dealer (I say local, they're still almost 15 miles away from me) and spoke to someone who sounded like they knew what they were on about. He said "whatever you do, don't drive the car" and asked if I had AA/RAC or similar and could I get it recovered to them. They'd take a look at it and let me know what was wrong.
He said that it could just be the tensioner that needs replacing (especially if we've caught it early enough - hence the reason why he's said don't even start the engine up again) , which isn't particularly expensive according to him. they've done this on a number of cars with similar symptoms and it's solved it, apparently.
I said that if it turned out to be needing a complete chain then surely there's something wrong with the design etc etc because a timing chain doesn't need to be replaced as part of a servicing schedule. He agreed with this but stopped short of saying that it would be paid for by Vauxhall or anything - just saying that they'll take a look as soon as I can get the car to them and let me know.
After reading about someone else on here (can't remember the name now, sorry notsure.gif ) getting Vauxhall to stump up half the cost of the chain replacement I'm not quite so worried about how much it's gonna cost. If I had time and spare transport available I'd get it done at my local independant garage - but sadly I don't and need it fixed ASAP - so it looks like the main dealer is my only option. 🙁
