Gearstick???

Can anyone tell me the best way to go about tightening up the gear stick.

I put my vectra in gear and the gear lever has a lot of play in all gears and all directions north-south and east - west etc and a hulluva lot of travel east to west in neutral too.

I have lifted the cowling and noticed the ballcock things and the 2 levers running along the centre console in to the underside of the dash.
Does anyone have a solution as I would like the gearbox to feel a bit tighter through the gear stick.

There should be 4 bolts securing the gearstick assembly to the floor of the car. The 2 cables at the bottom are the gear selector cables. It might be that your cables need adjusting or the bolts may have come loose??

TBH, personally I wouldn't start messing with the linkage cables but if its just a case of tightening a few bolts then carry on. It could be that the assembly is just worn out. The only way to sort that is get a new assembly from Vauxhall or sometimes they're on ebay.

thanks again i think ill take a look over at vx spares and see if they have a nearly new assembly and consult my wee book a bit more.

it would probably be better to replace the assembly
dunno..
adjusting the cables is quite straight forward, but you need to do it in a set order

dont suppose anyone has any idea how much something like the assembly would cost to supply and fit from vauxhall do you??? :?

i have the same problem. i took it to vxl a few weeks ago to get it sorted and all they did was clean regrease and reassemble. now its even worse so its going back in on thursday. ( its under waranty otherwise i would of done it myself)

Yes mate! quite right get it fixed! Let me know when you got a minute how it went could you? If you can get a rough price for me I would appreciate it. If it proves too much (which of course it probably will be when you go through a main dealer) then I have a standby plan involving some rubber bands and and little quick fix thingy. (basically a bodge job!!!) :oops:

If that works I will post some photos.
