my vx220 engine is LESS shaky than when the bits were on my vec :shock:

there appears to be NO issues running with no balancer shafts :shock:

except....it's blooming quick :lol:

so how did you block the oilways luna_s? just welded them up? Are they easy enough to get to to weld without taking the bottom end off? Were there any worries about bits of weld dribbling down inside?

After seeing this and vocky's bottom end post I still can't really see what's happened with the balancer shaft sprockets. Does that existing flange bit in the machined piece run against a bearing surface in the block? Was that all there was on the balancer shafts? It looks a bit thin considering the force of the chain - or is that bit just to stop the sprocket dropping out the front? I noticed the sprocket assemby has a single bolt hole - does it have something else to help it locate in the hole properly and a bearing inside?

I drifted the old bearings out, which helped to understand how to block off the oil flow,
(you have to squish them to get them out of the block)
vocky just drifted his bearings in a little bit more (using a 30mm socket and extension bars) thus blocking off the flow,
I just soldered up the holes (on brand new bearings), using a soldering iron and solder, seems to have worked, plus i also didnt drift them in as far

this pic explains the idler gears (i hope) basically the bit to the right bolts to the block and is the balance shaft front bearing,
you cut the end off the balance shaft and bolt it all up.

Thanks. That clears it up 🙂 Moving/soldering the bearing metal sounds like a good idea - at least its not damaging the block irrepairably. Does it look like there's any problem with air/oil flowing through the now open hole, between (i guess...) adjacent cylinder bores?

my vx220 has been ok without the balancer shafts

the rear bearing has a single 4mm oil feed slot and by forcing the bearing over the hole blocks off the oil supply 🙂

my friend explained that maybe the balancer shafts are to make the engine steady on tickover, as the tickover is quite low, and when cams are fitted it causes an imbalance, so by removing the balancer shafts, smooth tickover returns notsure.gif

sounds a good theory anyway 😃

edit: oil pressure is 80 psi on tickover and over 100 psi at high revs 🙂

Whats the trick pulling the shafts out when stuck in the block then? Some1 mentioned puller,but went no further 😐

Engine on a stand in the "spare room" balance shafts turn smoothly and slide out a little,retaining plate taps round just wont pry out and dont want to break them like matey on here,lol

might be worth getting a set of molegrips on the bolt and give them a good pull ,they can be a bit tight

one of mine was free spinning and held in by oil just used power of greyskull and pulled it out by hand
the front one was harder to get out but just kept moving the the shaft mount till it came loose
try the mole grips worth a shot if that dont work you will have to lever them gently till there loose enough to slide out
