yay things looking up again, found a cylinder head and a place that'll recon it with new valves and guides for 245 quid, game on again!!

just done timing belt waterpump and thermostat on my corsa this morning - that went quite well 🙂

Got head today, new guides and valves,
gave it a go with the dremel for a bit,

how do you know when to stop ? i kept going with a roll cartridge and removed quite a bit of material, quite a pile in fact 🙂 from the exhaust port area, is it just by eye ?

yer right... tuning the z22se is VERY expensive compared to other/older opel engines.

Except on ebay and other bidding sites like that. I found a group a exhaust for a z22se from lexmaul for like 125£

i would never dare to try and port my head myself ! dunno..

try not to remove too much, it's easy to take too much off :lol:

go by the above pics, remove about 3mm from the throat and 2mm from the sides of the throat

yeah i marked up to where the gasket is and removed material there,
youre right about how easy it is to remove tho 🙂

Ill take some pics of the port once ive finished it. need to order more cartridge rolls

and to think 'a tuning company' once told me it was impossible to port a z22se head :lol:

It's a wonder the z22se has any power at all with such rough standard ports dunno..

still it's free power and better than paying £500 for a ported head :shock:

how much power will a ported head free up then with a standard setup?

i'm guessing with modern casting methods and design the head is pretty good to begin with anyway, just getting rid of the casting marks cant really do any harm, as for gains no idea - i doubt very much but every little bit helps 😃

why would they say impossible ? unless they didn't want the work, saying that i contacted two companies with no response either dunno..

it used to be 10%, but with todays better designed heads probably 5-10 bhp, depending on how good a job is done - you get what you pay for :lol:

i wish i was as handy as u 2 then i'd go for it myself !

but damn my mechanical knowledge doesnt go much further then checking oil lol...

i mean i know alot of things theoretically but never touched any engine myself except for my scooter when i was 16 😃 Dont want to mess my baby up

And i aint paying a tuning company a shitload of money for only 5-10bhp

yeah seems pretty hard to get any serious power out of these engines without induction mods (SC, turbo, TBs)

your talking 10bhp with cams 5-10 with head, maybe another 10 with a decent exhaust, and a freeflow filter, extra 30 is handy in a light car tho 😃

oh and not clever here, i just like doing stuff myself rather than throw money at people, its all about reading as much as possible and taking your time, and good advice from forums like this 😃

this is the throat area, notice the modded left hand ports are curved now and the standard right hand ports still have the corner

Yeah i was just looking at this,
seems at factory they create a rough head then drill 1 hole for the seats, then another for the seat itself, without doing any finishing up, every port is a different shape with different angles and casting marks - cant do any harm to remove 😃
did you do any combustion chamber mods ? - i was thinking of around the exhaust valve

I just cleaned them up a touch, don't want to affect the compression cheers..

plus theres little or no gain from doing it, I go for maximum gain - the short radius being the best gain, then the sides just below the short radius and finally port matching showo..

I forgot to mention that I worked in flow control for ten years, so know a little about restrictions :lol:

exhaust ports finished - inlets next - wont take as long as theres a lot less material to remove 🙂

does take a bit of time to do them, even though it's easy to remove the excess material :roll:

heh youre right, just a bit daunting attacking something that costs a bit - in case it all goes wrong, bit of a gamble !
