I live in Cumbria in the North West. Last month I purchased a X-Reg(2001) Vectra b 2.2CD with a Z22SE engine which had done 68K miles on the clock but with no service history. As a precaution, I contacted Benny three weeks ago attemptting to arrange a day with him to change both the Primary Timing and the Balance Shaft chains. Unfortunately, Benny is very busy in the summer and the earliest he could offer me was in August!
I could not possibly take the risk of hanging around for another 2 months for Benny to do the job as the timing gears in the Vectra had started rattling. Instead, just a few days ago all the timing gears in my Vectra were quickly replaced by a local mechanic as recommended by a friend near Carlisle who has years of experience on changing all sort of timing belts/chains. He changed both my chains in the kits in an afternoon maybe not as fast as Benny but he charged me a reasonable labour cost of just £100. Obviously, I had to purchase the Timing and Balance Shaft chain kits myself and I got them both cheap on eBay from directsupplies1 (Primary Timing Chain Kit item number:350326761064(Original GM part no.12577385)) for £100 and the other Balance Shaft Chain Kit item number:350327543098 (Original GM part no.55563405) for the same price £100. These two chain kits are genuine GM parts truly impressive with all the bolts, oil seals & gears and supplied with a new timing case gasket! The combined P&P of the two chain kits was £9.95. So the total cost of replacing all the timing gears with two chains works out just under £310 including labour and parts.
I'm really pleased now with the Vectra running so much quieter and responsive, above all knowing that the engine is given a new lease of life and safe from timing chain failure!
Shek.
