what parts to replace befor chain snaps?

I've got two Astras, both 2001 with ₉₃,000miles and ₉₆,000 miles.
None of them has ever had a chain replaced.
The second Astra rattles when the engine starts, and so now Im seriously thinking about replacing the chains for both of them, cause my friend's Zafira just died, cause of the chain snapped.

I would like your advice as to what parts I should have replaced.

the essentials are

timing chain kit
timing cover gasket
cam cover gasket
crank bolt
oil + filter

Get them both done as soon as you can. Thats the last thing you want to happen to both your cars. As above for the parts needed.

if it rattles on startup, stop driving it before it snaps :shock:

I'll try to have the parts replaced as soon as I can. beggining with the one that rattles.

Almost 3 months after I posted this message and yet none of the Astras have had the timing chain replaced.
The Astra in worst conditions is not actually mine but my sister's. I was tired of telling her to get it fixed, but she was not really convinced I guess
Now it is not only scary to listen to the rattling (when cold only), but you can also feel how the engine vibrates, so tomorrow she'll take the car to get the chain replaced.

my astra now has ₉₅.7k miles, and with just some ocasional rattle I've been maybe too confident that the first one to snap will be my sister's astra. I do appreciate your advice guys and take it serously but I was short of cash to get it fixed.

I have now one last question, as the time to replace the chain has come.

Would it be too risky to only replace the timing chain kit, and keep the same balance shaft chain?

the water pump/ balancer chain does not suffer like the cam chain dunno..

I would certainly replace the cam chain kit asap 🙂
