Timing Chain Timing

Right - engine mostly put back together and I can't get crank pulley off as bolt is well stuck tight. Also getting slightly rounded with all my efforts!

If I allign bottom end to TDC is there anyway of timing in the cams without taking off timing chain cover?

I locked the timing chain to the camshaft sprockets with several tie wraps so I know that is fixed. In addition, camsafts in head are approximately where I left them.

Would the chain have moved off the crankshaft sprocket at all as the guide wouldn't have made it possible (head just removed)?

you need to remove the cover to time the engine correctly 🙁

mine jumped a tooth during installation, with the cover off, luckily I was paranoid about the timing and noticed on the first check of the marks 🙂

you need to remove the bolt, might be an idea to buy a new socket and 18" lever, cheaper than a rebuild if the timing is out 1 tooth :shock:

Yeah understand.

Just wondering if you put engine at TDC and measure valve lift.
Lift should be equal on both inlet and outlet cam lobes. I have used this method in the past.

Might give it a go and see.
