eml light and a couple of other things

hiya guys this is my first post so go gentle on me please, im not mechanically minded in anyway so any advice will need to be in lamens terms

right well ive had my 2001 sri estate about 4 months now and ive got a feeling its not running as it should, when i brought it the guy said the eml light comes on, he told me its either the catalyst or o2 sensors, when the light came on had a mechanic hook it up and the guy was right.....ill get back to that

ive also noticed that sometimes at low revs there is a misfire

the next thing is when the engine is hot not all the time but sometimes it takes longer to start (will start first time, its just that the engine turns over longer before firing) then when it does start the engine splutters for a second or 2 (as if theres not enough petrol going through)

anyway had the catalyst and o2 sensors changed yesterday and a remus centre section fitted, not had the car hooked up to have the light switched off yet but the splutter and misfire is still there

sounds like the EGR valve is stuck open, i had the same problem on my 2.2. Does it start ok when cold just takes long when hot?

cheers dodger you hit the nail on the head startd ok in the cold just a little longer when hot

now i might regret saying this but....EGR valve? wouldnt know where or what it looks like.....could it be fixed or will i need a new one?

I think the egr valve can be blanked off notsure.gif

but dont quote me on it tho, as this was done on my last veccy a 97 plate, so newer ones might be different,
so someone correct me on this please . . .

LOL, listen to me, i think i know some stuff but just get others to do it.

you can remove the egr valve and clean it with carb cleaner but you are better off getting a new one.

It is a device that recircluates the exhaust gases back into the engine at times when you are travelling therefore you will not notice it happening. I is all to do with keeping thr emissions down. As yours is stuck open the exhaust gases are going straight into the engine at start up.

ive read about blanking it off, instead of replacing would blanking it off work???

now i promise this is the last of my stupid questions, where is the egr valve on my car? if im looking at the engine head on will it be in the area between the throttle body and the power steering resevoir? god if im asking questions like that i shouldnt even lift the bonnet... i can see this going horribly wrong

the valve is on the right side of the engine at the top above the gearbox it should be rusty brown cause its cast iron and you will see the spring inside it

vauxhall have a field remedy for this im sure i found it in tis2000 yeah its to remove the egr valve its Field Remedy: 1721

In case of customer complaint where an EGR valve is detected as faulty
during diagnosis, it should not be renewed but removed.

Close exhaust gas recirculation port with a cover plate (Part-/Cat.-No.:
24575592 / 58 50 526) by using gasket (Part-/Cat.-No.: 12570863 / 08 51 761).
The groove on the plate has to show in direction of radiator and and the
plate labeling upwards.
Fix the superfluous wiring harness connector with a cable strap
(connector port in direction to front wall).
Program ECU with SPS as of TIS-CD 50 (select without EGR).
For torque values and labour time please refer to Service Instruction
"Demounting and mounting EGR valve".
Please note:
On the Astra-G and Zafira with Z 22 SE engines, this conversion can only
be done on MY 03 vehicles as of the following engine numbers (Omission of
pipe- cat):
11 133 945 - MT without check control
11 131 764 - AT without check control
11 133 885 - MT with check control
11 133 302 - AT with check control
On vehicles with engines prior to these numbers (with pipe-cat) the
defective EGR valves have to be renewed.

right can you tell me if ive found the erg valve? excuse the words im about to use i dont know the technical terms

from the air box followed the pip that goes to the throttle body, just below that pipe theres another one going into the throttle body ( a metal one with some type of covering over it. i followed this pipe to what i think is the egr valve. found2 nuts need undoing which relases the little ball joint thingie which hold the plastic engine cover, then found 2 bigger nuts behind that.......is that what i need to undo and put the blanking plate in there?

riht i was looking in the wrong place i was looking to the immediate left of the power steering fluid resevoir ill have another ganders tomorrow if the weathers decent cheers for the pic vocky

a big thanks to everyone who replied for their help

this is what i did, took the easy bolt off first attempted the second dropped the socket...doh. managed to retrieve the socket used a spanner instead took me ages to undo the second bolt because there was no room could only undo it an inch at a time

made a template of the gasket onto a coke can cut it out put the bolt holes in then put everything back together

one bleeding knuckle later took it for a drive not had the misfire yet and it starts a lot better from warm too
