Ctrl alt and del and turn anything avg off...and see wot happens..

sounds like it needs defragmenting as the files it needs are spread over the drive and not in one place.

you have some corrupt (bad sectors) on the disc - run a disc analyser to check the state of the disk i.e chkdsk would do it

Does it also do this when you first turn the PC on? As Windows does some background maintenance task at each bootup. I've got some registry hack information to turn this off somewhere.

No matt it seems to later on at night aftr the pc has been on for a while, i know AVG does a search each night at around 8.00pm but this seems to be ether before this or after aound midnight. Ill do the ctl/alt/del and see whats running when it happens again!

that noise happened on me lappy.
I thought it was doin summit normal.

It died not long after :cry: lost hods of stuff.

I should of known as went thru 2 hard drives when i had a tower.

Now i just seem to melt network cards, but touch wood hairy woods best

U found this yet matt....cud do with them to get me mrs laptop booting quicker..

Not yet mate, I need to find the magazine with the information in. I need to do this to my PC upstairs as well, as it's made a big difference to the speed of my laptop.

Her laptop takes 6mins to boot up...even with a fresh install..

bloody hell! I've been given one to fix which takes about that long to boot. My lappy is over 3 years old, and boots in under a minute, this is less than a year, and is absolutely shite! When they come back from holiday, I'm going to recommend a full re-install, and I can then at least look at what is being installed.

I turned lots of stuff off in msconfig(startup) to see if that worked,,,still the same tho.

Yeah, thats normally a good place to start, but there will probably be some more shite being started by windows which may be causing it.

Just switched the pc on and now it sounds like something is scanning the hard drive, ctrl/alt/delete does`t show any applications running other than internet explorer notsure.gif
