hesitation poor idle

hi help please my 2001 coupe seems to run lumpy when cold poor idle and bad hesitation as if it is overfueling no engine check light on untill i accelerate but always clear its self afer a few restarts codes read undocumented error changed spark plugs coolent temp sensor cleaned t/b still the same turn engine of and restart after warm up all fine till engine is stone cold again then back to square 1 bin like this for 12 months driving me mad please help . when cold it seems to run as if it is not fireing on all cylinders as if it is damp

either coil pack or sticking egr valve

try blanking the egr valve first, as it costs nothing, check out the tuning section for the how2

tried blanking egr valve no change . may be coil pack but why would it not run bad when warm if it is breaking down , it does have hesitation at speed if i put my foot down hard but fine if i gradually put foot down.Told it could be air flow sensor but where is it,vauxhall said it could also be the cat and run of a nice long price list of possible faults to me it is temperature related.any how thanks 4 info please sending as i am try to fix it my self

the 2.2 does not have an air flow meter

but try a new dis pack first or ideally borrow one

many thanks new dis pack it will be then in new year keep sending more info on any other possibilities can some one also tell me what the push in sensor in the intake pipe is and what it does

I think its intake temperature or pressure, Its definatly not air flow. Where abouts are you? if someone else with a 2.2 lived near you and was a nice chap they might let you swap parts to try and eliminate the fault.

the sensor on the intake is 'air temp'

does this have anything to do with bad runing problems as i said it sure seems to be temp related

could also be the upper lambda sensor, that controls the fuelling and has a built in heater, if the heater has failed it will take a while for it to warm up and provide the correct fuelling

Sounds more like a vacuum leak at the throttle body or inlet manifold.

A very small leakage can cause an erratic idle, and power loss throughout the gears

checked lamdba sensor heater reading 12.9 ohms it is within range how do i check for a vacuum leak

This does sound like the EGR valve. Easy to check too.
If it is stuck open when connector removed - time for a replacement!

thanks 4 the info chaps egr valve moves up and down each time i turn the ignition on is this ok or should it stay in one place up or down might be weekend before i next get a chance to look at it but i will let you know how i get on dont want to get a new dis pack untill i have elimated some more of the less expensive options

EGR sounds fine then if it moves up and down.
Should be fully closed when power is removed.

Could be coil packs - need to find a friendly owner for a swap!

high idle update

did not get a chance 2 look at weekend due 2 poor wheather did block off egr valve today drives 50% better but still hesitates and idle speed still dips but not as much i will get a dis pack as soon as one comes up at local vaux bits . cheers

Hi,

Just for info really mine was (once hot) mis-firing every now and then and when coming to junctions nearly cutting out, idle was very low etc i.e ready to cut out and did on some occasions, did some checks first then went for a new ignition coil pack and runs sweet now. £170 iish + vat at vauxhall or around £130+vat trade, OR £113+vat at autovaux (genuine part).....
