MOT test every 2 years

I have just been reading a lengthy report on the over implementation of EU regs. in the U.K. (I have to - its my job). Included was the proposal that the current annual mot test be reduced to every 2nd year on vehicles 4yrs. old and over to fall into line with EU regs.

My initial reaction was yippee only half the stress/cost but on reflection I'm not so sure.

I know people who use forums such as this do not scrimp on maintanence and are therefore unlikely to to take risks with safety items, but there are an awful lot of people who don't know their exhaust pipe from their air filter.

These are only proposals at present and no doubt if they are serious it will hit the media but I thought I'd put it out there for comment. notsure.gif

I'd already started a topic, but this is more indepth, so I'll close my original one off.

I'm more than happy to know that my car is safe and roadworthy by paying £40 each year, and like you said, there are probably a large number of people who will abuse this fact, and run un-roadworthy cars.

Daz is an MOT tester....maybe he can shed some more light on this??

Didnt now anything about it until the news this morning tbh....personally i think its abad idea as theres alrtesdy to many unroadworthy vehicles on the road as it is...
Will keep u all informed when i find out more...

yeah i know what you mean Daz, it was only last night i was followed by someone with their headlight out of adjustment which was blinding me.

Not sure matt...the prices are set by vosa anyhow but we can charge wot we like under there prices and not over,,,
Think the mot's would dry up abit tho...

Matt, apologies for barging in I hadn't realised my prediction for the report finding its way into the press had already come true.

To put it in context the MOT test was just quoted as an example and made a perfect media sound bite.

The report covers every aspect of EU law and its effect on the UK sleep..

Given the govt's current obsession with speed cameras as an effective safety measure it is difficult to see how they will justify the halving of the only safety check currently required by law.

Anyway, it just means I'll have to pay out twice as much every other year. :?

Thats OK, the more info the better. It was in all the papers we get at work, and there was quite a lot of talk about it, as there are a load of car nutters here.
