In Car Ipod Nano?

Some advise!

Iv`e heard is possable to hook up an Ipod Nano to any in car head unit that has an input for a CD changer. Is this true? The partner has been asking me what i want for xmas and i have been thinking about one of these but for the car only. Most of the music i listen to is Hard House, Trance, DJ mixes ect. Does the ipod play continue right the way through or does it pause between tracks like a mp3 CD does?

The 5th Gen Ipod Video has a new version for Operating System which allows gapless playback on mix CD's (see my old post about this). Not sure about the Ipod Nano though. As for connecting to a HU, there are quite a few different ways to connect them, it really does depend on what HU you have.

The new firmware upgrade for the 5th gen ipods allows gapless playback, so no worries there. Just plug it into itunes and it'll ask you to update. If you have a library the size of mine (nearly 50gig) it takes bloody forever to update it + the ipod to gapless playback, but it only needs to do it once

As for hooking it up to the headunit, im not sure. I have just bought and installed a new pioneer 6800 MP with the adapter that allows you to control the ipod through the head unit. In theory though, any headunit with an aux in should be able to play from an ipod if you get the correct lead. I have seen some stuff in car audio places that have controls for the ipod on a seperate stalk etc. Im sure theres a way to do it, just poke around a bit

Andy sure there is one in there. What head unit you got standard? The missus has a pioneer and she bought a pioneer adaptor so she can control the ipod throught the stereo and c harge it at the same time. Or you car buy a fm transmiter that you plug into the head phone jack that transmits an fm signal then you tune your head unit to the same frequency.

Those itrips (the transmitters) are pretty decent actually. Only cost about £20. The main draw back is the amount of battery they suck. My 30gig lasts about 2 hours with an itrip plugged in and i believe they have a stronger battery to the nano. Ive never used the ones that plug into the headphone socket though (mine plugs into the dock connector), maybe they are better. I dont think they work with the 5th gens though (not sure)

They sell them on play.com £9.99 i think they have their own battery and they work on anything with a headphone jack.

The ITrips are still "technically" illegal though, but they are making them legal in the new year.

I have one and in London it is useless! (well the one I have is anyway :? )
There are so many radio stations that it is almost impossible to find a frequency that is not used. Also if there are pirate radio stations these tend to be pretty local, so although there is no interference at your house you might find a pirate station a couple of miles down the road that is more powerful than your FM transmitter and interferes.

I think different transmitters are more powerful than others though...

I'm guessing it would have the same trouble in all major cities...

Halfords sell the Itrip things £29. There the worst way to get the sound in. The next way plugs into your ariel input, sound quality is much better. Next way is as you asked and into your cd multiplayer input, quality is excellent this way, but as the first 2, you have to use your ipod to control track selection and menus etc although I believe there are some out there that have a separate unit that let you control the ipod remotely. But as above the best way is to see if you can get and ipod interface for your stereo.

Right, which is the best ipod to get for gapless playback? Dont want one with video playback as i will never be used so a waste of money. Also how can i find out of my head unit/steering wheel controls will control the ipod? My head unit is a sony with an autochanger output.

Well Andy, I plugged my girlfriends old IPOD in (4th Gen) and it's also converted all the music on that for gapless playback as well. So I'm not too sure if it's the ITunes software which does it, or the software on the IPOD, as I've not updated her IPOD.

Matt what ipods are class as 4th gen? Ipods are all new to me so i havn`t a clue :lol: Basicly all i want is an ipod with a decent memory (4gb) that will play gapless music in my car. I have itunes music player on my pc so i take it the ipod will link with this?
