Drinking Oil

Hi, Ive got a 2.2 Astra which I have only had for about 5 months. When i first bought it I kept checking all the levels in the engine bay to make sure everything was ok. Done this every week for about the first month and half and all seemed ok.

At the weekend, I decided to check everything over again only to find that there was no oil regestering on the dipstick so I bought some oil to top it up with and it took about 2 litresto fill to the max mark.

There is no obvious sign of leak i.e. no pool of oil on the drive ect but the underneath of the engine does look a bit oiley (not enought to be a leak that bad).

Anyone got any ideas? (i have been gunning it lately, could it have burnt off?)

i aint had mine long and had a simalar problem but it was all down to the dipstick...its a real pain in the arse coz sometimes you dip it and it registers full and other times nealy empty! I read on ere that you have to twist it as you pull it out to get an acurate reading.
Also how many miles have you done coz that will determine how much oil its used also car.gif

Have done about 5500 miles. I will try the dipstick thing, just hope i havent overfilled it.

Im sure I have seen someone somewhere say that his uses about 0.5ltrs per 1000 miles. Surley this cant be good?

the actual wording from the manual across all ranges is

Oil consumption (l/1000 km) = 0.6

just to double check, is that 0.6 Ltrs per 1000 km !

That seems an awfull lot. So technically, after 8300 km i would have no oil!!!! (thats only 5157 miles)

That cant be right, am I being stupid and mis-reading the above post.

Gaz also had a similar thing to this....when we did the Rolling Road...there was no oil in his, and he's checked his a couple of days before hand.

So where exactley is all the oil going? just through being burnt and oiling the cam chain?

this was happening on my sisters 2.2 vec for a couple of weeks b4 the chain snapped (though after the snappage we checked the oil and it was half way between the max min...phew!) i can only assume that the guide oil seals leak at speed as you can never see where it goes but it dissapears alright. Couldnt think of another reason.

ALSO, AND PERHAPS MOST INTERESTINGLEY, the pistons were thick with half unburned oil which wiped off easily, these engines on 40k should look almost as clean as the day they were manufactured
