how does this engine sound?

just changed a balance chain which has been faulty for as long as ive owned the car

it sounds like it whines when it accelerates over 3k

thanks for having a look vocky. i was doing some reading on this site and remember evocarlos saying there was a problem with the tensioner and it was whining.

tbh ive never heard it with a smooth balance chain as seen when i took the case off and there was a shiny part where the chain was slapping!

Sounds like alternator, sounds like mine did it after doing timing chain then few months later alternator packed in.

no worries, yeah the whistling noise, i didnt notice it before i did timing chain, but did after, when driving it sounded like a cross between a supercharger and turbo spinning higher the revs got, the noise wasnt there after i changed alternator, i guess it is something to do with tension on aux belt like vocky said.

relieved that's it probably not chain related. as i said, I'd lived with a faulty balance chain and not really noticed until i was washing car with engine running and heard a slight rattle. so dont feel confident i know what a noise free engine sound like lol

interestingly i checked the alternator in a separate tensioner related tapping noise and it spun fine, no roughness or noise oh idle. however i can't say I'm an expert!

yeah i wouldnt say chain related either, i was looking for a vacuum or air leak when mine developed, dont panic, if it is your alternator it will start to throw other symptoms out before it packs in altogether lol

lol by all means if you need a hand give us a shout, if you start noticing your heater controls stop working intermittently followed by abs and tc light showing when driving and loss of power steering (if yours has semi electric steering) then its your alternator failing, these symptoms will occur over a 1-2 month period so enough time to have it replaced.
