Broken Engine? :(

Hi All,

I'm new to the forum but could really do with some advice.

My wife has a 05 2.2 Zafira B on 80k which has been using about 2 litres of oil per week (200 miles)! There isn't any smoke or a mark on the drive, but the car sounds rough and its been like this for almost 12 months. Its been to a main dealer who replaced the chain and couldn't find any other problems or explain the excessive oil use.

I drove it briefly today and based on how it sounds I'm surprised it still runs!

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem maybe or am I better off looking for a replacement engine? If so are there any recommendations?

oil consumption is usually gunged up piston rings on the z22se engine.

Engine noises can be a few things

knocking at 2000rpm = big end bearings / crank worn
rattle at cold start up = one of the two timing chain tensioners has failed
rattle at revs = slack chain / failed lifters / blocked oil restrictor in the cylinder head starving the top end of oil

Thanks, it probably has all 3! although the chain was only replaced 6k miles ago. Any idea on the cost of repairing or is this beyond repair / damage already done? On a side note its used a tank of coolant in the past 6k miles / 12 months too!
