You will need a compression tester and access to other tools. If you dont it will be cheaper to get your garage to perform the test than buy tools and do it yourself. You tube has lots of videos on how to do a compression and leak down test - would suggest u look there if you have the tools already or can borrow them

One step at a time - you are making the assumption something is wrong with ur stem seals but that may not be the case. As said you need to determine if smoke is because of rings or stem seals - a compression followed by a leak down test will help you pin point what the problem is and hence the most cost effective repair.........
