Aircon removal.. yay or nay

Our aircon doesn't work, presumably it needs re-gassing. But if it's been out for a fair ol' while, I think there's a good chance it'll leak?

I've also read that non-functioning aircon can sap power, is this true?

If so, and the wife agrees, is there much to be gained - if anything, from ripping it out?

you can fit a vx220 drivebelt, this stops the aircon from being driven by the crank (y)

Presumably stopping the aircon from being driven, period? (it's not like it works, it really wouldn't be a huge deal right now)
What are the pro's of doing something like that dude??

yes the aircon would no longer be driven and if you ever decide to recommission the aircon it's just a case of swapping the belt once more and fixing the broken aircon bits.
