Holly Sh*t!!
Problem
One of my Exhaust-Cam lobes has been ground down several millimeters, I'm presuming because the roller isn't turning and/or the valve is stuck in a raised position.
The picture shows the extent of damage.
**Q: **Is it common for just the roller to seize and cause this much wear, or is this likely something more sinister?
Another cam is obviously in order.
Q: is it reasonable to fit a new rocker and valve etc on just the one affected piston (#4 in this case)?
Symptoms
The Zafira has been guzzling oil for months, and I've this week taken to replacing a leaking Crankshaft-Pulley Oil Seal which has been throwing out oil, to which I also attributed the excess oil consumption but was probably wrong.
Background
The head was a second-hand complete unit, imported from Mexico in 2012, when I had to replace it as well as timing/balance chain kits etc. I figure the valve in question may have been dodgy from the start, and I guess feasible it could be collateral damage from from a Z22SE which had done a timing chain.
**Q: ** should I just get a second-hand cam or risk another second-hand complete head? - I need to get the Zaffy running asap but without having to pull out grandma's gold fillings to fund it.
I'd greatly appreciate your collective wisdom once again, as even though I've undertaken replacement of chains, water-pump and head so far (thanks to ya'll on this forum), I haven't tackled pulling cams and valves to bits.
Cheers
