Now this is a really strange one. Im trying to retrieve a small magnet that is stuck to my balance chain - its in the exactly the position of the green square in the pic. But i dont want to remove timing case to have to get it out.........

Now i would like to just turn my crank slowly so that the magnet moves with the chain up to the water pump sprocket and then i can grab it with my fingers thru the water pump service opening. Problem is my tensioner is not in and i cant manage to insert it activated ala carl (im just not strong enough to push it down that way). So my question is if put in the tensionor unactivated and looking like the second pic will that provide enough tension to allow me to turn the crank manually by hand WITHOUT the chain jumping.......

Just in case ur wondering the magnet got there cause i had it tied to a string in attempt to get a socket that fell there. Good news is ive got the socket out of the engine as i was able to dislodge it and it fell to the sump, but obviously the magnet is now stuck to the chain.. like i said frank spencer lol..........

Yay got the magnet out! It seems my old style tensioner cant be inserted activated? Or at least i couldnt manage to do it - i just couldn't depress the piston sufficiently to get the tensioner body into the head it was just too hard - had to do insert it unactivated and then release it. I could actually see tensioner activate looking down under the exhaust sprocket with a torch. This allowed me to turn the crank and move the magnet up to the water pump sprocket🙂. Now its reassembly time 🙂

When you say old style tensioner is that the original style or the upgraded one as used in all the new kits.

I mean this one. Its not the original tensioner that caused all the chains to snap prematurely in early z22se engines - its the updated version of it with the larger hole that doesnt get clogged as easy. I was getting tapping noises on start up - which i thought was lifter noise and everyone else said was chains (but i knew it wasnt) and carl suggested tensioner. So i pulled my cam cover off checked chain tension - pretty tight despite high km's - and when i pulled out the tensioner although it was clean it was stuck in an unactivated state. So im hoping when i reassemble ill have no more tapping on start up.....sump goes back on tonight yay!
