Finally got my cam cover off my head as i wanted to check the tension of the chain - which still looks tight there was some slight play maybe 2-3mm but nothing excessive. I was pretty pleased there was no varnish or sludge and the head was bathed in oil so thumbs up there.....took some close ups of the cam lobes - they felt smooth with no ridges or grooves do u guys think they look OK?

Having confirmed that my timing chain isnt loose i removed the tensioner to give it a good clean as i suspect it is causing the tapping sound on start up - it made a loud clicking noise as i removed it so im assuming it wasnt stuck. Glad i put cable ties on the sprockets cause im sure the chain would have jumped when i took off the tensioner too!!!!

What is the best way to clean the tensioner? Do i need to dismantle the tenioner body to clean of just the part where the spring is and the hole on the end?

Fully strip and clean the tensioner, quite easy to do 🙂

That looks in very good shape for 455,000 Km (282,000 of our UK miles). Keep the good work up ! (y)

Vocky i plan to use mineral turpentine to clean the tensioner is that OK? Also have two other concerns

Im sure i saw the cam sprockets try to move when i removed tensioner even though i had them cable tied. The chain didn't jump on the cam sprockets but is it possible it jumped on the crank sprocket??
Ive lost a socket down the timing case aaarhhhgg- i was thinking i could just crank engine by hand and it would end up in the sump yes???

Shine a torch down the timing case and see if you can see it, then if you have one,a magnetic pick up and see if you can carefully get it out again. If you can't then I would think the suggestion would be to remove the timing cover to see where it is. No guarantee that it's in a position to drop into the sump it could be lodged somewhere it won't drop but will jam up.

I was hoping u wouldnt say that opening up the timing case means taking engine pulley off which is damn tight - i put an endoscope camera done thru the top still couldnt see it. I think im going to put the endscope down the water pump service opening instead and see if it shows up there

Good idea especially if you have an endoscope to see with. Hopefully you'll see it and be able to get hold of it. Failing that it might have dropped straight into the sump.

Yeah got it off ebay only $14aud only problem is u cant focus lense so if u get too close to an object u only see a blur. Me too hope i find it. In the meantime i just finished cleaning my tensioner - i used engine degreaser as i couldnt think of anything else to use and have oiled it activated it. Ready to go back into the engine now.....then i can get to work finding that socket bugger......that will have to wait til morning tho.......

I dropped a bolt down mine when I had my head off. Took a couple of days to find with a magnetic pick up tool that has leds on (no need for separate torch) anyways it was nowhere near where I'd dropped it. It had bounced and lodged between the chain and crankshaft pulley.
I didn't have access to an endoscope at the time but I understand your frustration with the focusing aspect.

Yep almost. I couldnt find it with endoscope so opened up the sump last night - i could hear it rolling around in there. Still have to take the dipstick guide tube off before i can fully remove sump and retrieve the socket. Really looking forward to putting it back together and driving it. Has been two weeks now......as i have to do the work in evenings after i finish work.

Kewl, at least it's found and hopefully you still have a complete socket set lol
Mine was off the road for a month with one thing and another but for some stupid reason I didn't buy new spark plugs, (rushing to get it MOT'd) after a short run to the store for plugs I decided to change them and one came out in a very peculiar way.
Hope you're up and running again soon, think my next job may have to be the oil rings on the pistons

Not as difficult to get out as I first thought, I bought a set of stud extractors from screwfix and within half hour and a little patience it was out. Lol.
