Reconditioning engine: price?

Hi all, my engine goes through quite a bit of oil and I'm always topping it up, my car is a bit smokey when I put my foot down too, and the engine has recently started sounding a bit tappy.

I was wondering what sort of price I should be expecting to pay to get the engine reconditioned to fix these issues? I'm a novice when it comes to anything engine wise, I can clean my throttle body and that's about it so far

Any help is much appreciated.

Tappy will probably be the chains. Around £250/300 in parts

using oil is useually the rings

smoking is useually rings or stem seals

so its useually rings n top end rebuild

so id say roughly £500 in parts

if you can do it yourself(not likely by your first post)

But labour could be anything from £200 to £1000

Thanks Dave, seems like a pricey job then haha. The tappiness to the engine only seems to be under acceleration though, would it still be the case that this would probably be the chains?

Not sure. Normally a rattle on start up.

Just curious - what grade of oil are you using and exactly how much oil consumption is "quite a bit of oil". These engines can use a bit of oil though oil consumption shouldnt be exessive ie under 500ml per 1000km. Smoke at high revs is usually piston rings. If your lucky it could just be you just need to use a higher viscosity oil say 10-40 or 10-50 and perhaps ur engine needs to be flushed. Otherwise its a change of rings.....
