Update on progress.
Life has been too busy to do much on the car, but the past two weekends have been fruitful.
Eventually got around to putting the cam cover back on, put some oil into the sump, disconnected the injector harness connector and pulled the fuel pump fuse.
With a set of jump leads keeping the battery topped up I toolk some readings with the compression gauge.
No. 1 285 psi
No. 2 265 psi
No. 3 260 psi
No. 4 150 psi.
My heart sank, but I thought about the low reading and convinced myself that this could not be due to bent valves.
As the engine had been dry for several months I put half a cap of engine oil into the pot and tried it again. Compression was now nearly 290 psi 🙂
Checked out the other cylinders after introducing a little oil. All pressures came up to just under 300 psi, with No. 1 being slightly over the 300 psi full scale.
Completed putting the throttle body, air mass, and plugs with coil pack back on. Connected the injector harness, and turned the key. The engine started immediately with an initial cloud of black smoke (no surprise), then died 🙁
Second setback, but short lived. I had forgotten to replace the fuel pump fuse. Once that was in the engine started and is running nice and quiet.
Today I finished tidying up the rest of the disassembly, reinstalled the alarm sounder, cleaned up the brakes, and put some air into the tyres. After this I took the car out on the road for a test drive, and it is all working well.
Thanks again for all of the support I have had through this forum. It has been so useful and let me know I was not out on a limb by myself.
