Which Air Filter (Airbox vs Cone)

Hello there guys, I have a mk4 Astra 2.2, however there is no air filter or air box. I can see there are many air filters out there, Pipercross cone, Pipercross panel, K&N Cone, K&N Panel, Green cone and some others (Viper, OEM)
I was wondering, what would you recommend for maximum performance?

the cone will give a better sound, however the standard airbox with a panel filter will give the best results

k&n in the standard air box that been derestricted would yield best performance the cone you would actually lose about 5 hp
and with the k&n it will last longer than the car 🙂

Thanks, I'll go with the air box and k&n panel, cheaper AND better performance Win-win. I have read, however, that you can drill holes into the air box to improve the sound and airflow. Is it worth doing this and deristricting or should I just derestrict it?

I have a bottom of a airbox with loads of holes in

iv never fitted it but I may do if you get good results from it

I drilled holes in the airbox on the VXR. Just make sure you drill them on the side facing the wing, as that will draw in colder air. It probably won't give any additional performance over the K&N Filter, but will give additional noise similar to a cone filter.

I have had, standard airbox / modified air box / open cone and now a Viper.

Modified airbox is very similar to my custom viper with a bit less sound.

Open cone is fine unless in traffic and you can feel it big down but is very very raspy after 3k.
