Changing balance chain sprockets...

Cheers, ive swapped both chains, balance sprockets, both tensioners and had sump off to clear out all the debris from the original front guide breaking and cleared out all the metal shavings so if i can get the slack/noise sorted im hoping to enjoy my car again...

The only thing that i can think i done is fit the rear guide (white one) loose (ie no bolt fitted) before i fitted chain and sprocket to cams...i fitted inlet sprocket first followed by exhausT sprocket. from memory the slack was there before and after i fitted the tensioner. I know all the marks are lined up because it took a few attempts to make sure the crank sprocket didnt jump a link.

Just a thought, were both chain kits genuine GM or third party. The reason for asking is that some of the third party balance chain tensioners were getting stuck - possibly a faulty batch load (I think they were made by FAI).

I think @[deleted] and Jimmy had issues with new BC tensioners which were making a ticking noise due to them being stuck.

i did have an issue with my balance chain tensioner but it was the ratchet inside, it didnt lock out like it should bu twould only do it for 30 seconds to a minute then calm down to nothing.

who manufactured the chain kits?

Evening again, had a mechanic mate have a look and he though the same with the temsioner. Had it out, photo below.

Still the same, actually sounds like its lower down behind the metal cover on the crank sprocket...anything likelybto cause a ticking/knocking sound in there?

That sounds quite similar, did the noise increase as the revs climb?

Out of curiousity where would a good place t get a new tensioner only?

The photos above (post #46) show the cam chain tensioner which looks OK and is the latest spec used in the Z20NET engines.🙂

The tensioner Dave and I referred to above is the balance chain tensioner.
Do you know the manufacturer of the balance chain kit ?

I got a balance chain tensioner from the main dealer(GM ) But there around £85/90 alone.

Ah ok sorry guys, i know the balance chain tensioner definately set when i pulled the pin out.

I got the BGA kits from Autovaux, should probably have just got the genuine GM stuff in hindsight.

More annoyed that im not entirely sure what the noise is for fixing it...dont mind having to strip it down if i know whats causing the problem.

Hmmm... not so sure on BGA
To be honest, I would always fit genuine GM parts especially for important areas like this.

However if you can get the cover off again and check everything (i.e. all guide bolts nipped up to 10Nm) and if your feeling brave even refit and align chains again.

If you could post some pictures as you do it that would be good - @[deleted] would be able to advise then.🙂

To be honest i was trying to car back on thr road and thought BGA was a fair compromise, that way i could get it mot'd in March and worry about a full engine rebuilt at some point for a supercharger upgrade and use GM kit then.

Aye i dinna mind stripping it down...just want to rule out anything else it could.be before i rip it to bits.

The only other thing I can think of that might be making that sort of noise is the drive belt tensioner bearing or alternator bearing but it sounds unlikely if you say it's from lower down.

Edit: could try removing the drive belt just to eliminate these.

Afternoon All.

The saga continues...after a mechanic mate came round last night to hear the "ticking" sound...within seconds he was sure it was tappets. Whipped the rocker cover off and all appears ok with the chain, well tensioned (no slack when I rotate it now). But the springs/tappets all appear tight and no obvious signs of problems.

One thought that did come into my head was the car rattled like the proverbial when the front guide snapped up until I could get it home. It doesnt appear that the timing ever jumped but what possible damage could have happened with the chain having excess play in it for a few miles?

HI Kevin,

No updates at the minute, been away for the weekend and got a year older in process 🙂.

At the moment though I'm installing the tc button loom and the rocker cover is off for further investigation...

Evening all,

Latest update is that the chain has been rubbing on the guide which runs over the top of the cam sprockets and speaking with my mechanic mate he's confident it's rocker damage, some of the valve springs and buckets have more play than others.

In the meantime TC button loom and HU are plugged in and working again .

Next plan of action is to strip the exhaust side cam...any hints or tips?

I do know of a cheap 2.2 vectra for sale so might buy it for an engine swap and rebuild my engine c/w supercharger...

If the car for sale is a Vectra B, then the inlet camshaft is slightly different at the gearbox end as it is used to run the power steering pump (exhaust side is the same).

Hmmmm cheers never thought of that...was just assuming the engine would be the same. I'll check before I go buying it.

In the meantime I'll persevere with my engine...would just love to get it back on road 🙁

The Z22SE's on the Vectra B have a hexagon drive in the end of the inlet camshafts for the power steering pump. 🙂
