found in sump

Hi all took off sump today to fix leaking oil sensor and found a couple bit in the sump, could anyone identify these for me?

That looks like a piece of one of the timing chain rails and a head of one of the bolts that hold it in place

dont drive your car untill further investigation.

whats miles on the clock? Has it had a chain?

looks like the top balancer guide and bolt could be from any of the 3 other guides that use that type of bolt

Dead right, Dave. With that in the sump, I would expect a lot of little bits around the pick-up filter restricting the oil flow.
@[deleted] If it hasn't had a chain, then that needs doing right away. Get the chain cover off and check ASAP.

Oki doki got about 170 on clock so I'll have the cover off the chain and have a butchers cheers guys

Take the rocker cover off n look at the sprockets n chain there, at 170000 its either been very very well maintained or its had atleast 1 chain, so it could be from previous damage.

Iv just found all this in my 6litre sump(glad its not my engine )

i need to make sure its completely clean before fittting it to my car.

top stuff dave, ive had the engine since 110 000, miles and serviced reg, will i be able to see guides from the top?

Yeh you can see the top of the front guide with a torch, I think that bit u have found is the top edge of it.

@[deleted] is the chain man so im sure he can confirm which part it is.

Id say get the rocker cover off and the side casing so u can have a really good look.

edit... its the bottom edge of the front guide i think so id get the side casing off.

no worry i think ill have a butchers . is the side casing easy to get off?

Not a massive job, jack, a good socket set and female torxs, a slim 3/8 ratchet is good to get the tensioner off the alternator belt.

A crack bar for the wheel and crank pulley, or a impact gun.

the bit you have pictured is it black ? the front guides are normally black the others are cream 🙂

It looks like the left hand side bit of the top balance chain guide. In Carl's photo in post #5 (block is upside down) the right hand side of the lower guide.

I thought this bit but sat on the other face because of the oval hole?

Nice one I'll have a go at that tomoro do I need to torque. The pulley when putting back on?

Torque settings for Crankshaft pulley bolt are:

Stage 1: 100Nm / 74lbf ft
Stage 2: Angle tighten a further 40 degrees
Stage 3: Angle tighten a further 30 degrees

It actually looks like this piece of the balance chain guide. See the triangle type shape its a little different to the tip of the other guide rails and the black rail
And you have a broken bit of thread to remove

Isnt that hole round though?

The damaged piece looks like it has a flat edge like the front guide.

hopefully its from previous damage and wont matter.

im sure we will find out later.
