So what are peoples preference for oil on these 2.2 engines

chill

10-30 or 10-40

flatbeat

10/40 on the se engine and
I use castrol gtx you want a good oil
Or if you can get gm oil

Thanks flatbeat this is the motor I am getting in the next few days, it says Full Service History but does not say if main dealer but ill find out soon enough and if it is they will be using GM so will stick with that if not ill use Castrol GTX

Iv used gtx but im not convinced its good, im gonna try gm next time. I had titan supersynth before n that was great.

A lot of peeps are saying 10w40 but websites recommending 5w30.

I tried 5w30 once but the engine didn't seem to sound as nice as when using 10w40. gm oil is cheap enough to. so that's what im using or shell helix 10w40.
change it at least every 5k miles or more often.

I agree iv got castrol gtx 5w 30 at the min n I dont like it, im going gm 10w 40 6litres , when I bolt the 6litre sump on.

That's interesting, when Carl did my chains he specified 5W/30 for mine. Must admit it runs fine from what I can tell plus that's what was in my old Zafira too. However, is there a reason for going over to the 10W/40? Does it lubricate better or is it merely that the viscosity is better for older/higher mileage engines?

10w40 is what Vauxhall recommended for my 2000 Vectra B z22se, for annual mileage of 10k 2 oil changes a year.
5w30 is more for high drain intervals, 20k+ per year where the car is used for long journeys.
I found mine burnt more oil and rattled more on start up with 5w30. that was at low mileage, 30k ish so went back to 10w40. didn't have any rattles and chains where still sound at 117k when head came off for porting. crank was still spot on, only problem was with No 4 bore which was close to max ovallity at 1 point of the bore.

Yea mine does rattle on cold start ups. So if I switch to 10w40 it will be better for my engine in the long run?? It's only done 67k miles.

Sounds good to me, at least it's not like my old Harley, that was straight 50 lol.

GM 10-40 for me as well with changes every 5 - 6k

I use 5W/50 in mine but I do trackdays in it so wanted the better heat hanling capability

10w/40 before that and had no problems or noises

FWIW my Vec B has had GM 5w30 since new and I don't appear to have had any issues.
The car doesn't seem to burn much and it has kept the engine clean. 🙂
