Overheat.

Took the car out yesterday for about 12 miles after it's been stood for a few weeks and the temp went to nearly 100, when i got home i checked the level which had not moved, the fans were running but the left side of the rad and the hose going to the stat were cold, squeezed the hose to the stat and the coolant level moved. The top hose on the right side of the rad was hot, do you recon the stat is stuck closed?

It's z22se 2003 auto.

Do you know the last time the coolant was flushed out? Can you see coolant being returned into the coolant bottle while the engine is running?

Couldn't say when it was flushed out last but the cooland looks a very clean red, only noticed coolant being returned to expansion bottle when i squeezed the bottom rad hose.

Yes thanks Dave, had a look at stats and i really think that's the problem here but i had it in the back of my mind that coolant not being pumped around. but then again if stat was okay at least some hot coolant would mix with the cold especially after 12 miles around country lanes (about an hours drive).

Defo should have circulated by then.

Test the thermostat or just replace it there about 15quid I think, @[deleted] had 1 a few weeks back, im sure he can tell you exactly how much

One more question please, when take the housing off, is it a gasket or a seal?

I allways like to test them beforw fitting aswell.

Not cos they have ever failed just cos I like to see how they work hahaha.

When mine went i replaced it for a cool running thermostat from courtenay sport. Mine came with new seals in the box.

Mine was took off and changed within 5 mins. Just be prepared to loose all of your coolant so have ready to replace.

I got a standard GM one from Autovaux and it turned out to be the same as the so called cool running stat. From what I can see its just a stat from warmer climates. I would have preferred the same that was in from the factory, the temp was more stable and I never ever got mayo in the winter, now the temp is all over the place and I get a little mayo.
